7 ideas to make every neighbour feel warm this festive season

Written by Roisin O'Neill

The run-up to Christmas is often a busy, exciting and joyous time for many as we look forward to celebrating with our families and loved ones. For some, Christmas is a reminder of those who they’ve lost, or can’t be with and for others, it’s a struggle due to costs, loneliness or other life challenges.

At Nextdoor, we want to work together with you, the community, to make sure everyone has a neighbourhood they can rely on during the festive season. We’ve listed 7 ideas you can use on Nextdoor to do something for a neighbour and spread positivity at this time of year.

1. Offer a seat at your Christmas table ๐Ÿช‘

You can make a real difference in your community by offering up a seat at your Christmas table for those neighbours who may be feeling lonely or have no Christmas dinner to go to. It’s a fantastic way to give back and meet new people. Simply create a post on Nextdoor with the #ChristmasKindness.

2. Give a Gift in For Sale and Free ๐ŸŽ

Our research shows that 54% of people plan to change how they buy gifts this year, due to the pressure they face from the increased cost of living. Some may not be able to buy anything at all. Yet 71% of people have unwanted gifts taking up valuable space in their homes. Do you have a nice present in your home that you could regift?

3. Share a warm space or warm hub โ™จ๏ธ

Due to the rise in energy costs, many neighbours are facing “heat or eat” scenarios. You can help them by sharing helpful information such as where to find local warm spaces. Check out Warm Welcome or Warm Spaces to find a local warm spot.

4. Wish your neighbours a Merry Christmas! ๐ŸŽ„

A small gesture can mean so much to the atmosphere in a neighbourhood. It could be something or someone you are thankful for, your favourite joke, or what you most look forward to. Will you help spread December positivity by wishing your neighbours a Happy Christmas?

5. Share your favourite Christmas recipes ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿพโ€๐Ÿณ

Christmas is often a time when neighbours think about cooking and trying recipes, sharing your top tips or your all-time festive faves is a great way to find ideas and learn from each other. If you have food to spare, why not cook something up for the community?

6. Share or attend events in your area ๐Ÿฅณ

Are you organising an event around over the festive season or curious to know if there is a fun event in your neighbourhood? Then check out the ‘Discover’ section on Nextdoor. Using the green button, you can easily create an event, which then appears in the list of events in your neighbourhood and on the map. Handy isn’t it?

7. Share a Christmassy photo ๐Ÿก ๐Ÿ“ธ

Some people really deck the halls! If there’s a nearby house that’s bringing cheer to your neighbourhood, take a picture and share it with your neighbours on Nextdoor. This can be especially helpful if the neighbour is lighting up their house to fundraise for a charity. You could also post some winter scenes of local parks you love in the neighbourhood.

Thank you for all your contributions to your neighbourhood. Nextdoor wishes you a Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2023! โ‡๏ธโ‡๏ธโ‡๏ธ
