Meet the team: Roisin O’Neill, Head of Community, UK

Written by Roisin O'Neill

Hello neighbours,

At Nextdoor, our purpose is to cultivate a kinder world where everyone has a neighbourhood to rely on. We want to help neighbours build real-world connections with one another and strengthen ties with their local community. And, we believe that everything starts with a wave ๐Ÿ‘‹. With that in mind, I’d like to tell you a bit about myself, my neighbourhood and why I joined Nextdoor so you can know a bit more about the team here at Nextdoor in the UK.

My neighbourhood

Having been a north Londoner for ten years, I recently moved to South London to be closer to friends. Moving to a new neighbourhood reminded me of everything we take for granted in places we already know; things like knowing where the best local restaurants are, where I could pick up a second-hand table and which nearby park serves decent coffee. Within the first week of moving in, my neighbours and my community on Nextdoor had told me everything I needed to know leaving me much more settled and with some brilliant local spots to visit. My favourite place to get coffee? Brown and Green Cafe, Crystal Palace – both the service and the setting are fantastic!

Why I joined Nextdoor

I joined Nextdoor because the purpose of cultivating a kinder world where everyone has a neighbourhood to rely on means a lot to me. In good times and bad times, your community will be there for you – we have all witnessed this, especially during the pandemic. I am constantly inspired by the incredible acts of kindness we see neighbours sharing on Nextdoor every day.

As Head of Community, I enjoy finding ways to add value to our neighbours’ experience and helping them to create meaningful connections in their local community whether that’s launching exciting new features such as our interactive Halloween Treat Map, inviting them to join competitions to share the beauty of their neighbourhoods such as our #LoveYourNeighbourhood photography competition or encouraging them to nominate their local heroes in our annual Good Neighbourhood Awards.

Right now, as part of our ‘Give a Gift’ initiative, we’re asking neighbours to list one free item in Nextdoor’s For Sale and Free section to help people find low-cost Christmas gift ideas in the run-up to Christmas. Helping neighbours through times of crisis is a huge part of why I love my job and am grateful to work at a company with such an important mission.

My favourite Nextdoor moment so far?

Partnering with the Eden Project’s Big Jubilee Lunch to encourage neighbours to celebrate together for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The scale of the partnership meant we had the opportunity to bring millions of neighbours out into their streets to make new friendships, one lunch at a time. Working with a partner who also believes in the power of community was inspiring and a lot of fun!

Outside work youโ€™ll either catch me jumping in muddy puddles with my toddler or at the nature reserve I set up with a neighbour I met on Nextdoor. We plan community workshops such as food growing for climate resilience, wildflower planting to increase biodiversity and turning grey urban areas to green so that neighbours have access to nature where they live.
