Community building

Become a London Community Champion!

Written by Roisin O'Neill

What matters to you in your London borough? Would you like to see more green spaces, or less traffic and better facilities? Do you want to see more neighbours saying “hello” on your street and helping one another out? Do you want to create a welcoming space for new neighbours and build a better community for all? You can make all this happen by signing up as a Community Champion in your London borough!

A Community Champion is a neighbour who likes to contribute to the neighbourliness, safety, and fun of living in their borough. Someone who dares to take the initiative and involves others in doing so. Someone who wants to see the local area improve and more neighbours smiling at each other on the street.

What’s involved? How does it work?

By signing up, you become one of the Community Champions in London. You’ll collect points with each action you take on Nextdoor to bring your neighbourhood together. At the end of the month, we’ll add up your points for that month and they will be visible on the Community Champions scoreboard. The neighbour with the most points will be featured on Nextdoor’s blog and their inspiring story shared within the community.

Through your participation, you become part of the Community Champions group on Nextdoor, where you can connect with other community-inspired, like-minded neighbours to share tips and ideas on building stronger communities. There’ll also be a quarterly meet-up organised by Nextdoor so you can meet and inspire each other in person. Would you like to join?

Frequently Asked Questions

We’ve detailed below some answers to questions we anticipate you’ll have, if you still have questions at the end, please send us a note via the form on the Community Champions website.

What does my participation entail?

As a Community Champion, you want to get involved in bringing your neighbourhood together. By being active on Nextdoor, posting, commenting and getting conversations going, you’ll begin building community where you live and collecting points at the same time. Through your participation, you become part of an online community group where you can exchange tips and ideas and be invited to a quarterly activity in London organised by Nextdoor so that London Community Champions can meet each other. How much time you spend on your participation is up to you.

Can I join at any time of the year?

The Community Champions programme is a brand new initiative currently being piloted in a selection of boroughs. Anyone living in one of the pilot boroughs can start immediately, for those members not in these boroughs; you can sign up and we’ll keep you posted about when we’ll start in your borough.

What are the pilot boroughs?

  • Croydon
  • Southwark
  • Lambeth
  • Enfield
  • Lewisham
  • Newham
  • Hammersmith and Fulham
  • Kingston upon Thames
  • Hackney
  • Greenwich
  • Hillingdon
  • Redbridge
  • Havering
  • Waltham Forest
  • Hounslow
  • Bexley
  • Barking and Dagenham

Can I participate if I do not live in London?

No, unfortunately not (yet). The Community Champions programme is a brand new initiative so we are starting with London initially.

Is participation free?

Yes, participation is free! However, you are responsible for any travel costs if you come to one of the activities Nextdoor organises every quarter.

Can I win something with my points?

If at the end of the month you have collected the most points of all the Community Champions in London, we’ll put you in the spotlight by sharing your story on our blog page.

Can I be a Neighbourhood Lead and a Community Champion?

Absolutely! Neighbourhood Leads have a moderating role on Nextdoor and can of course also join in as Community Champions.

Can I unsubscribe from the programme?

Absolutely. If you send an email to help@nextdoor.co.uk with the subject “Unsubscribe as a Community Champions”, we’ll unsubscribe you from all Community Champions scoring, communication, and activities.

Can there be multiple Community Champions active in a neighbourhood?

Sure, it’s fun! This way you work together towards the same goal and you can also easily find each other offline to exchange ideas and tips.

What do I get points for?

You collect points for each of the following activities on Nextdoor, so long as your posts/ comments are in adherence to the Community Guidelines:

  • Post with text = 2 points
  • Post with video/photo = 4 points
  • Post with 5+ comments/likes = 6 points
  • Start a poll = 7 points
  • Post an item in For Sale & Free = 5 points
  • Like a neighbourhood post = 2 points
  • Comment on a neighbourhood message = 3 points
  • Welcome a neighbour with a virtual gift = 2 points
  • Start a group = 2 points
  • Every activity in your group = 1 point

How can I see my points?

We will email you an update each week with your points so you can track your progress. At the end of the month, we will add up your points for that month and the points of the 10 Community Champions with the most points will be visible on the Scoreboard of the Community Champions website.

Do I start over with my scoring every month?

Yes! Scores are refreshed on the first of the month. That way, new Community Champions also have a chance to top the leaderboard.

When do my points start counting?

After registration, your scoring for that month will start a week later.

If you still have questions unanswered, please visit the Community Champions website where you can leave a question via the form. We hope you’ll give Community Champions a go! We’d love to help you build more connections where you live through this programme.
