Good Neighbourhood Awards 2021 – Winner of the Community Group of the Year Award

Written by Roisin O'Neill

This year’s Good Neighbourhood Awards proved to be bigger than any year previously with outstanding nominations of stories from all across the UK. Neighbours shared the efforts and collaborations of local community groups who were using Nextdoor to build connections within their neighbourhoods. The well deserved 2021 winner is the Avonmouth Projects Group, we learnt all about their activities and how they delight neighbours in Bristol.

Avonmouth Projects Group started with a simple idea; bring cheer to the community. They run various activities throughout the year but are best known for their annual Santa’s Sleigh event.

Group volunteers walk over 20 miles handing out almost 2,000 selection boxes to children in Avonmouth and surrounding villages all whilst dressed up in festive themed characters.

They arrange the Christmas tree and maintain year-round lighting in Avonmouth Park so neighbours can enjoy festive lighting throughout the seasons. The group received numerous nominations from neighbours who enjoy the regular events and the sense of community they bring.

Since 2017, the group have also provided a community bus in partnership with Lawrence Weston Community Transport. The bus trips support the elderly by taking them shopping every week which helps to reduce social isolation and seclusion.

Ian Smith, one of the Avonmouth Projects Group volunteers, said:

“It was such a great surprise to be awarded Community Group of the Year. We obviously don’t do what we do for the recognition but it is always nice to know that it is appreciated. For us, it is all about the simple acts of kindness that just go such a long way.”
