With Halloween over for another year, it’s always hard to throw away the pumpkin you spent so long carving. There are many ways you can recycle your masterpiece, rather than letting it go to waste.
Environmental groups in the UK estimate that 18,000 tonnes of pumpkins are expected to end up in landfill this year, that’s enough pumpkin to make a bowl of soup for everyone in Great Britain.
So, here are our tips to get as much use out of yours post-Halloween:
- Use the flesh for delicious recipes such as pumpkin soup, roasted pumpkin or pumpkin curry! Be inspired with these yummy recipes.
- Wildlife such as hedgehogs, squirrels, birds and badgers love pumpkin, so why not give them a tasty treat? Take it to the bottom of your garden or to your local woods or nature reserve.
- Once your pumpkin is carved, hollow and been used make sure you use it for compost. If you don’t have a compost or food waste bin at home, have a look on Hubub’s website to see if one of there #pumpkinrescue events is near you or have a look on your local council website for your nearest composting site.
