How a gift of a guitar grew into a flourishing business

Christmas time often sparks a new hobby or interest, either through gifts or simply having more downtime to try something new.  This was certainly the case for 38-year-old neighbour Daniel McGee. It all began with a build-your-own guitar kit he received at Christmas present three years ago...

    The Christmas Spark

Although Daniel received his first guitar for his 35th birthday, it was actually a Christmas gift a few months later, of a build-your-own-guitar kit,  that truly ignited his passion. With a background in carpentry and a love for music, he crafted a guitar himself when he decided to learn a new instrument before he turned 40. The result was a uniquely personal piece that friends and family couldn’t stop raving about. “That reaction planted the seed,” Daniel recalls. “Building guitars that were personal and sharing that with others felt really special.”

    Building a Dream

Starting out wasn’t a walk in the park. Without the funds to whip up a batch of guitars, Daniel got creative. He asked for tools and materials as Christmas and birthday presents. A big break came when he shared a post on Nextdoor and a neighbour replied and introduced him to a local music shop that donated some salvaged parts. That generosity was key to turning his passion into a side business.

Daniel found immense support from his local community, especially through Nextdoor. Neighbours shared his progress, connected him with music shops, and offered endless encouragement. “People have been amazing,” shares Daniel. “Even those who don’t buy still want to help — they share advice, contacts, or just kind words. It’s made such a difference.”

Daniel swears by the power of his local community. “Without it, I wouldn’t have made the connections I have. It’s better than LinkedIn!” he laughs.

    Looking Forward

Daniel dreams of expanding his guitar business, not just as a source of income, but also as an outlet for creativity and connection. He envisions hosting a showcase in a place like HMV or Rough Trade, bringing musicians and art lovers together.
I just want people to see, play, and enjoy the guitars—to take a piece of that creativity home with them,” he says.

As we count down to Christmas, Daniel's story is a heartwarming reminder of what can happen when passion, community support and a bit of festive spirit come together.
