We received almost 2000 nominations in this years Good Neighbour Awards, an incredibly popular category, Community Group of the Year is incredibly difficult to judge. Amplified by the cost-of-living crisis, this year communities came together in so many different ways to support and help one another. Volunteering in warm hubs, food banks, school uniform swap shops and supporting each other mental and physical health with walking groups, exercise clubs and book clubs.
This year we have two wonderful winners of Nextdoor’s 2024 Community Group of the Year;
The 2024 Good Neighbour Award winner for Community Group of the Year, is:
Highbury Photography Club – Highbury, London
The Highbury Photography Club which was founded by neighbour and professional photographer JC Hermier has grown to 40 members across Highbury and the surrounding neighbourhoods, and is followed on Nextdoor by more than 1300 neighbours from the local area. The club was formed in February 2021, early into the second national lockdown when (socially distanced meet-ups outside were allowed) as a way to alleviate social isolation and stay connected.
Nominating the Highbury Photography Club, neighbour Imen Trabelsi wrote:
I nominate The Highbury Photography Club for bringing people together (especially during the difficult time of the pandemic when the group was set up), bringing smiles, excitement and positivity to people within the group and the wider community who eagerly await the weekly photography challenge. These challenges have brought comfort to some community members who have been going through challenging times.
Every Tuesday the Club are invited to take part in a new photography challenge to capture an image on a particular theme – the following Monday 10 photos are selected from those who took part and posted to the wider Nextdoor community to vote for their favourite.
A popular local choice with 10 nominations from neighbours, the clubs wider Nextdoor neighbourhood embrace and celebrate the photos the club capture. Impressed by beautiful photos of hidden, under-appreciated or forgotten parts of the surrounding areas – which in turn help them to love and appreciate their neighbourhoods.
