Nextdoor’s purpose is to cultivate a kinder world where everyone has a neighbourhood to rely on, and it’s important to remember that building positive and respectful communities is just as important online as it is offline in the real world. That’s why, as part of our global mission, we’ve spent the last 12 months collaborating with Australia’s eSafety Office to work together on their new Safety by Design assessment tools, now live and accessible around the world.
The new Safety by Design tools are designed for both startups and enterprise companies to guide, support, and educate all employees and employers with the mission of embedding safety into the culture, ethos, and operations of their businesses. We encourage all of our neighbours who are interested in improving online safety to go through the Safety by Design assessment flow to see where you can make a difference.
The initiative was developed and launched with our partners in Australia, however the overarching mission behind the work is definitely global. To cultivate a kinder world and help build honest, trustworthy and meaningful relationships within neighbourhoods resonates strongly in every country, down to every community that Nextdoor is a part of. We see everyday in our UK neighbourhoods the positive impact of supportive neighbours and feel the new Safety By Design tools connect deeply with our existing product features and our continuous work to uphold our values not just in Australia but in the UK and around the world.
Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman-Grant says, “Safety by Design is a global initiative – designed with industry for industry. eSafety has been so pleased by the support we received from Nextdoor as we developed our assessment tools. What impressed us the most is that Nextdoor was already exhibiting a commitment to Safety by Design by seeking to perpetuate kindness rather than toxicity and to create a supportive and safe environment for their users. This vision and action came straight from the top at Nextdoor and permeated throughout the organisation. eSafety is so pleased to have involved their CEO, their Trust and Safety Lead, and their Head of Nextdoor in Australia. We need more of this kind of safety leadership among executives and we appreciate Nextdoor helping to lead the way!”
As a Safety by Design partner, we helped the eSafety Office shape the assessment tools and provided insight and support at various stages of development. As you go through the flow, you’ll find several Nextdoor videos with tips of what you can do as employees or employers to help build a safer online world.
At Nextdoor we know that safety by design is a necessity in order to build a platform that helps neighbours connect, and create stronger, more resilient communities. We view the work of the Australian eSafety Office as best in class, and are delighted to partner today and in the future.” – Sarah Friar, Nextdoor CEO
At Nextdoor, we are constantly updating our product and policies to build a safe online world for all. This includes expanding our Neighbourhood Operations and Community Engagement teams, enhancing moderation tools, and launching new products to encourage civil discourse like the Kindness Reminder. We look forward to working with the eSafety Office more in the future and encourage everyone to explore their Safety by Design tools today.
